SATURDAY DAYTIME WORKSHOP FOR BENT FEST!!
Participating in queer punk scenes, we’re all used to the spaces we create existing for short periods of time, or being closed down before we’re ready for them to go. The cultures we participate in are ephemeral and we are often otherwise preoccupied and can’t really document them. This workshop is designed to provide a chance for us to take the documentation of London queer punk spaces into our own hands. Using one giant timeline we’ll be marking down our memories of queer punk spaces (where they where, when they existed, who was involved, how they operated, who played there, who you met there, what went on in them, where queer nights were held and so on), to create an archival object that records these spaces.
The method for this workshop comes from Charlotte Cooper’s queer and trans fat activist timeline, which you can see here: http://charlottecooper.net/fat/fat-research/a-queer-and-trans-fat-activist-timeline/
There’ll be some resources to take away too, hopefully a zine about what you can do with yr own archives!
The timeline from the workshop will be donated to an archive service (tbc soon) so it can be accessed and used by people in the future!
We’re also collecting materials relating to queer punk in London to deposit with an archive (tbc shortly). You can bring along fliers, zines, photographs, music, tickets, anything you want to donate (copies or originals!) to this archive.
After the workshop finishes, you can drop off materials (location tbc, but probably in a box in the quiet room or directly to me) throughout the whole of Bent Fest also for deposit. There’ll also be a digital dropbox for digital files (forthcoming!!).
This workshop is led by Kirsty Fife. I am a queer punk archivist who is currently doing a PhD about methods for documenting and archiving UK-based DIY music spaces at UCL. I also play in Cat Apostrophe, and used to play in Actual Crimes, Suggested Friends and a bunch of other bands, and makes Move Under Yr Own Power zine.
This workshop will be happening as part of the research project. Everyone attending the workshop will be given a full briefing about the project, including information sheets and consent forms. I’ll also be sharing these in advance of the workshop too. You can contact me about the project at firstname.lastname@example.org.
FREE ENTRY!! no tickets required!! pls invite all yr pals.
This is happening as part of BENT FEST 2019 24-26 MAY, which is a queer punk festival happening across the whole weekend with bands and dancing and fun times.
