People have always moved and people have always mixed. Migration has created the world we know. Our diversity as people of the world is our pride, our collective difference is our collective strength. Today is a celebration of Freedom of Movement.
It will be a day of learning and imaging what a world with freedom of movement for all would look like, anticipating the first major report of its kind commissioned by Global Justice Now.
We will learn of tens of millions of refugees barred from safety by violently policed borders, while $100bn worth of guns and bullets freely flow across them.
We will learn of billions of workers divided into nations, forced to compete with each other, while $4 trillion worth of capital crosses borders to exploit the most desperate workers with the lowest pay.
We will ask are open borders the most DIY approach to global inequality and the north/south divide? Is it essential to a world undergoing climate disaster, where large stretches of currently populated land will become uninhabitable or under water?
But we will also celebrate cultural exchange, the flow of knowledge and music, and the strength of real unity across diversity.
The event will be raising funds for SOAS Detainee Support, an incredible student-led initiative working in solidarity with people in and outside immigration detention centres.
Join us for a day of panels and workshops exploring what open borders will mean for all of us, and a night of spoken world, dance, live music and DJs celebrating the theme: Freedom of Movement.
We want this event to be accessible for all, so free ticket options are available. There are also £5 solidarity tickets and we will be encouraging those who can to donate at the event. The panel discussions will be suitable for families and people of all ages, there will be a creche for children and alcohol won’t be served. Food will be available. For the spoken word and live music alcohol will be served so it will only be suitable for 18+.
