We are incredibly excited to report that DIY Space For London have secured a space in south east London.
We will be renting the ground floor of a warehouse just off Old Kent Road towards South Bermondsey, and cannot wait to turn it into the self-sustaining venue for gigs, meetings and much much more – which is just what this city needs.
To everybody who has helped us reach this point, whether you donated, attended or organised a fundraiser, volunteered or just gave us an encouraging word or two: THANK YOU! After all the enthusiasm and ideas and excited conversations there’s finally a physical space where we can build upon, and for that we’ll be needing your help…
We have an aim to get the space fit for putting on events as soon as we can, but at the moment it is just an empty building with a lot of potential. Toilets, soundproofing, electrics: the lot needs adding. Over the past few months we have gathered a large group of interested volunteers (and we will be contacting you shortly!), but we can always do with more.
- Building is going to be our top priority at this stage. We will be immediately requiring designers, electricians, carpenters, plumbers, painters and architectural designers. If you have experience with planning permission and making buildings accessible, we’ll definitely be wanting you on board.
- Finance and legal volunteers will also be required. Do you have accountancy skills? Experience with dealing with the finances of co-operatives or charities? Experience with business rates and corporation tax?
- We’ll also be looking for events organisers and anyone with a head for communications, particularly when we’re ready to open up.
If this sounds like you and you’ve been wondering whether to step in and give us a hand, send your details, a list of skills and what time you can spare (whether an hour or a week, it’s all appreciated!) to email@example.com now.
Another way to help is to donate via PayPal or bank transfer (email us for details) – with the upcoming flurry of activity, now is the perfect time. Don’t forget that you can set up a monthly subscription – even if it’s a pound a month it’ll help us so much!
Once again, our sincere thanks to everybody who’s been involved so far. There’s a lot of work to do. It’s going to be a great summer.
